The Clear Lake High School Falcons had a hard-fought battle against their district rival, Clear Creek High School on January 25. The Wildcats did not have what it took to beat the Falcons this time. In their last game, the Wildcats overcame the Falcons 64-59, but with the coaching adjustments of Coach Tom Penders, this next meeting was quite the opposite.

Starting out the game with a score of 21-6, it was no surprise that this game was going to be a nail biter. After the tip off, the energy throughout the building was so ecstatic at the effort both teams showed immediately. The first half ended with a score of 23-18 with the Falcons on top. With not as much offensive production, both coaches were not pleased during halftime.

When the second half started, the Falcons got on to a quick 11-3 run, putting the score at 34-21. Hope for the Wildcats was slimming to a minimum. Regaining control of the game by the Wildcats kept in within reach at 46-44. The Wildcats would’ve had the edge at the end of the quarter, until Casey Davis got the ball with 1.6 seconds left and made a half court shot to put the falcons ahead.

As the momentous cheers went into the last quarter, it seemed as if they were not going to lay down the game even a little bit. As Creek’s starting center Hunter Smith missed 2 free throws with 58 seconds left the falcons knew the game was in the bag.

When the game was over the Clear Lake Falcons increased their overall record to 22-6 and the Clear Creek Wildcats are now 21-7. With no more games between these 2 teams throughout the district, the rivalry may just have to be brought into the playoffs.
