Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) is a student-led medical organization where students are exposed to the healthcare industry.

Being a part of HOSA allows students the opportunity to look into different career options in medicine they might want to pursue.

“Our school has HOSA to help promote and inform students interested in medicine,” Suha Ali, HOSA President said.

This year, HOSA made it a new requirement to join their club that you must be currently taking a medical-related course, such as Biomedical Science, HST 1, or Medical Terminology.

According to Ali, the club followed district guidelines regarding membership requirements.

Besides having an annual HOSA competition, the club is also involved in many community fundraisers and volunteer opportunities.

“This year we raised money for the MD Anderson boot walk as well as participated in the walk for ending cancer,” Ali said.

Some fundraisers that HOSA is currently holding are “Adopt A Family” where they donate gifts to students in need at school, and working with “Love Letters” where they donate handmade holiday cards to the children’s hospital.

“Additionally, we are doing a toy drive for the Houston Fire Department Stocking Stuffer Toy Drive,” Ali said. “We will put together items for the homeless and hope to visit some nursing homes.”

Some goals for HOSA this year are to have guest speakers from the community who are health career professionals come and talk to the club members.

“Also, we want to promote HOSA more in the community and advertise the club to spread more awareness in the activities that we partake in,” Ali said.

One main goal of HOSA is to help deliver quality healthcare to all people and this is shown by participating in fundraisers and the HOSA competition, where club members can participate in events that bring health awareness to the community.
