2020 Recap: A Year To Remember

Sarim Bhaidani, Editor

2020 has been a year for the history books. With the global pandemic and masks being the new normal, restaurants opening and closing, the Black Lives Matter movements, and last but not least the death of the beloved basketball player Kobe Bryant.

COVID-19 has reigned over the world for quite some time now and new customs have become old ones. There are still lots of debates over people wearing masks and info from surveys say that America has gotten better.

In Early June, 65% of Americans said they wore masks when leaving their house or apartment at any given time. When asked the same question in early August 85% of Americans said they wore masks leaving their home.

This goes to show that masks have begun to be a bit more tolerable for people now than they were before.

Though the restrictions are a lot more lenient now than they were before, there was a point where you couldn’t sit in at any restaurants whatsoever. Sitting in at food places such as Mia’s Table was a thing of the past and many people were not happy about it.

With the slowing down of COVID-19 cases, fast food places have opened up with drive throughs and normally sit in restaurants have switched to take out only or sit in with customers wearing masks only.

Before all this was put in place, we had what many people would call a tragedy. Kobe Bryant was taken from this life in an unexpected way. Kobe was on his way to north Los Angeles from south los Angeles when his helicopter lost control and crashed into a hillside.

In 2019 there were 51 fatalities to 122 helicopter crashes which isn’t a lot if you look at how many people die from other cause in the U.S.

With all of this something more recent would be the BLM protest that have only recently died down due to the amount of time passed. But no one will forget the murder of George Floyd by Derrick Chauvin outside a convenient store for using a fake 20-dollar bill.

There are an estimated 15 million-26 million participants in the Black lives matter movements making it the largest protest group in the United States.

The country was devastated with riots going on all around the united states and trump threatening to bring the military into the battle of rights and protest.

The most recent thing to happen in 2020 is the presidential debates and election. According to officials in charge of the elections. The presidential debates have been awful compared to ones in the past and the public agree as well.

At the time of the writing of this article, the election has not taken place yet, but the voting has already started, and the difference of opinion is as split drastically.

Though 2020 might have been rough for some and great for others, it definitely won’t be forgotten by the world.
