Hitting the Track
February 3, 2023
The new year is here and that means another sport is here as well. The 2023 track season is starting and will run through the end of the year.
“I’m definitely most excited to compete against my friends and improve every meet, to reach my goals,” Sam Golla said.
Golla is a junior on the varsity team and runs the 3200m and 1600m. There are many different things you can do if you are on the track team, and they all have their own challenges.
“I think the hardest part of the distance races is staying consistent,” Golla said. “Since they are so long, I want to give up in the middle of it.”
As the season starts, new talent from new people is brought onto the team.
“I’m excited for the new faces on varsity level trying to fill the shoes of some very important pieces to our team success last year,” Coach Nava said. “It’s always interesting to see who shines year to year with their individual achievements and help us win another district championship.”
As a rookie on the varsity team, Ilijah Limon is proud to achieve this as he has been working on it for some time now.
“Honestly, that’s just what I have been working towards. I was kind of hoping and expecting to be on varsity, but now that it’s confirmed its pretty cool,” Limon said
As an incoming athlete being a newcomer to varsity can be very frightening at times and it can always be encouraging to have some advice.
“Believe in yourself. Sometimes people feel they aren’t worthy of being on the team or don’t think they can do good enough at a higher level,” Golla said. “Being at varsity means you have already proven yourself. And I think it’s better to be proud of yourself and then work to be even better.”
Being a coach can be so stressful. A lot of the coaches not only teach a sport but a subject as well. On top of that the coaches have a home life.
“We’re responsible for much in the school, athletics, and home that sometimes it can become overwhelming,” Coach Nava said.
Although his life may be hectic, he seems to always want to be there to support his team.
“The coaches are just there to help us do what we need to do, I feel like the motivation and inspiration comes from yourself, the coaches just help it become reality,” Limon said.
We are excited for the boys to run this season and knowing what was done last season, we are excited to see if they can achieve that again.
