Working in the food industry can be a challenging and demanding job for many reasons. From long hours on your feet to dealing with difficult customers, there are plenty of reasons why working in this industry can be tough. Personally, I am a manager in the food Industry and there is so much that I can say, and so many stories I can tell. I have been screamed at, cussed at, and even had things thrown at me. It really does take a certain type of person to work in the food industry, not even because of the work all the time, but sometimes because of the people.
One of the main reasons why working in the food industry sucks is the low pay. Many jobs in the food industry, such as waitstaff and kitchen staff, are notoriously low-paying jobs. This can make it difficult to make ends meet and can lead to financial stress for workers. Additionally, the hours can be long and irregular, with many employees working late nights, weekends, and holidays. I make pretty decent money for my age because of my position; however, my boss tends to hire young teenagers because they are incredibly cheap labor. I don’t work to pay house bills or feed my nonexistent kids, but it is sad that there are so many people in the food industry busting their butts to do just this and make just enough to get by.
Another reason why working in the food industry can be tough is the physical demands of the job. Working in a restaurant or kitchen often requires long hours on your feet, lifting heavy objects, and working in hot, cramped spaces. This can lead to physical strain and fatigue, making the job even more challenging. There are a select few that can handle the physical toll that working in the food industry brings.
Additionally, dealing with difficult customers can be a major source of stress for those working in the food industry. Whether it’s handling complaints, dealing with rude customers, or managing difficult situations, customer interactions can be emotionally taxing and draining. There are going to be many times where you have to deal with rude customers at the same time you have 10 tabs in your head of things that need to be done in that exact moment at the same time there are 5 groups at the register. There is always something to be done.
Overall, working in the food industry can be a tough job that requires patience, resilience, and a strong work ethic. While there are certainly challenges to working in this industry, many people find fulfillment and satisfaction in providing delicious meals and excellent service to customers, me being one of those people.
