As students start up the school year once more, so does extracurriculars. However there are many that aren’t as popular such as Improv. Improv, a theater class, as well as a troupe, is based around scene based games that vary but always end in the laughter of the crowd.
Improv has always been a subject that many people had mixed feelings about. This was mainly due to improv being solely about making up scenes instead of having a traditional script. However improv is so much more than not having a script.
Improv is very much a group focused class, with games that require full attention to details so have a clear coherent scene with your scene partner. “We do a bunch of guessing and scene based games where we build character”, 12th grader, Improv Captain Elena Africano said, “As well as relationships with each other that we build upon for shows.” Having a scene that flows is key so the scene isn’t unintelligible.
Games in improv are only said to work if all members build off the scene and work together. This concept is very different from regular theater focusing on one’s imagination then relying on following a script.
Many people, outside of theater, don’t know of the improv class and shows. “I feel like if we made it more of like we advertise to the whole campus and not just in theater department then it could really take off of be a very successful”, 12th grader, theater public relations officer Jackie Mankin said.
Many improv members as well as other people from the theater department have been beginning to advertise the improv class through their personal social medias as well as the school’s socials and announcements in hopes for more students to watch the shows.
As we start up the new school year, the improv troupe continues to practice for future shows. Improv has shows almost every month so make sure to come by and see fantastic shows put on by the troupe.
