The emergence of new technological advancements for AI is beginning to cause controversy in Hollywood. Many people in the creative field are worried about the future of their jobs due to AI art, music, writing, and even acting. To combat this, many individuals in the industry have established reform groups such as the SAG-AFTRA strike (writing and acting reform) and the Animation Guild Union, who fought and are still fighting for better pay and reassurance that AI won’t endanger their jobs.
AI is endangering all labor jobs in the creative fields and is causing the loss of countless people’s jobs in Hollywood every day. The individuals that they don’t fire result in all the work landing on their shoulders, which also causes a lot of mental stress for the remaining employees.
Along with the expense of people in the industry, AI does not create original work. AI is derived from different ideas that already exist on the internet and it creates a hybrid piece of overused tropes and distorted imagery.
However, some people in creative industries believe that AI can enhance the industry and bring it to a new level. One of these people includes Grimes, ex-wife to Elon Musk, who has sold her voice and encouraged her fans to create AI-generated songs with said voice. For every song that is created using the AI voice, she will receive 50% royalties on any successful song.
People, such as Grimes, see AI as a benefit not because of its abilities but as a tool to capitalize on. These types of people don’t understand that when people create art the thing that makes it so special is its originality–that it came from a human’s ideas and passions. That’s what makes an art piece have emotion and make an impact on people’s lives.
AI is not something that should dominate Hollywood and be used as a tool because it is simply a cop-out and hurts the employees who work countless hours into creating pieces of art that overflow with life and love for the piece.
There is simply no substitution for human creativity.
