One thing about the 2000s is they had flair, fun, and life in a lot of ways we don’t today. From the style, to the memories, to the technology, this era forged the most iconic lifestyle known to date. I truly believe that our lives could be so much more fun if we took some notes from these times. For now, here’s ten things to bring back a little more pizazz back into our lifeless 2020s!
10. Chokers
We need to bring back some edge, style, and personality back into our lives. No more dainty, simple, Kendra Scott yada yada. In the 2000s teens sported all kinds from velvet, fabric, and lace layered or not and elevated their looks like no other. Chokers are fancy, dramatic, and the perfect touch of 2000s flair.
9. Bedazzling
Why have a boring, dull phone case when you can have a SPARKLY and BEDAZZLED ONE! Why have a boring, dull eyelash curler when you can have a SPARKLY and BEDAZZLED ONE! Why have a boring toothbrush when you can have a SP- okay you get it. But imagine how much more fun life was when it was sparkle and diamonds galore! Kids BEGGED for a Bedazzler for Christmas and SO. SHOULD. YOU. It was almost less about fashion and more about a war on minimalism.
8. Disposable Cameras
There’s nothing like a quick snap, a sliver of hope, waiting a week, and having the cutest pictures that lived on your fridge for eternity. The experience of using a disposable camera is so much more satisfying and rewarding than an ordinary iphone camera. They gave people so much more suspense that that kind of chaos needs to be brought back.
7. Albums with Printed Photos
Nothing beats the nostalgia that came from a chunky leather binder full of both embarrassing and sentimental 4x6s. The photos were real and they lived displayed on a shelf rather than tucked away into some old and forgotten hard drive. Looking through them with friends and family was yet another classic 2000s experience that we need to bring back.
6. Magazines
Replace the mindless scrolling with a classic Teen People or Seventeen magazine to cure your boredom. Not only was each page filled with entertaining gossip and cool designs to pass time, but they doubled as room decor! People used to tear out the centerfolds, tape them on the walls, and fill their rooms with celebrity face wallpaper.
5. Tracksuits
While Juicy Couture in particular doubled both as a fashion statement and a status symbol, their tracksuits were the comfiest, most stylish staples of the 2000s. While now we see worn out, grey sweats day after day, instead we could be seeing hot pink bedazzled sets that bring more color and fun to a leisurely outfit. Picture this: pastel velour, UGGS, oversized sunglasses, and a frosted lip– are you kidding!? I’d take that over a lifeless, overdone Nike set any day.
4. Girl Groups & Boy Bands
Not only was 2000s music superior above all, the girl groups and boy bands of the century gave life to friendships, slumber parties, or even at-home dance choreographies. The collective obsession with 2000s groups like NSYNC or the Spice Girls gave the people quality entertainment from outfits to songs to scandals. Arguing over the “best member” should be a staple experience for everybody nowadays as well!
3. Cool Ringtones
We are reminded of the epidemic of unoriginality constantly through the simple beeps and buzzes of our standard iphone and android ringtones. What happened to the times when phones didn’t just ring, but performed. While it may take a little extra work, a custom ringtone is just so much more FUN. Not only can you take it as an opportunity to show off your music taste, it would give a bland, awkward silence so much more flavor if we were to suddenly hear Metallica screaming from your backpack.
2. Burning CDs & Mixtapes
While yes the equivalent of making a Spotify playlist can be much faster, nothing can replace the experience of agonizing over the track order on a hand-decorated disc with doodles and praying that your computer didn’t freeze before the entire thing was complete. Yes, it can sound tedious, but burning CDs and mixtapes can make a friend or a loved one feel so much more special about the music you chose for them. Hearing music a different way other than the same old digital links gives so much more oomph to an everyday routine.
1. Flip Phones
With the phone ban in place, what better time than now to fully detach from your touchscreen and go full 2000s with a flip phone? Bedazzled for extra points. So compact, so shatterproof, so stylish. Can you just imagine the drama of snapping it shut mid-argument? Plus, some extra bonuses of no scrolling, no screen time reminders, and no addiction. All you have is pure drama, Snake, and life in easy-mode. I don’t think anyone would ever deny how truly iconic flip phones were.
