There is about a 67% chance that this new meme has invaded your school. Grades and kids alike all over the world have been yammering about the numbers 6-7. For months the phrase has been terrorizing social media and schools. Buy why is it so popular? Where did it originate from? And what’s actually funny about the numbers 6-7?
The meme originally comes from the song “Doot Doot (6 7) By Skrilla” which includes the phrase 6-7 which at first hand seems pointless and would be overlooked but you would be incorrect as many clips and edits of the famous basketball player LaMelo Ball who ironically is the height of 6 foot 7 would be made with the audio over it. The trend would further be popularized by a kid known in the internet as “The 67 Kid” where a viral video posted in March by the youtuber Cam Wilder showcases and young kid repeatedly yelling the phrase 67 with the common hand gesture. This video with other basketball players including elite basketball player Taylen Kinney, who began initially using the phrase during interviews and games mainly partnered with a distinct up and down hand motion with both of his hands and the meme spread like wildfire with many people picking up on it, putting their own videos under the audio, and eventually placing the audio under random clips and videos related to the numbers 6-7. The meme went beyond basketball and became more of an inside joke and what is known as a “brainrot” term in today’s society and internet users.
With the meme gaining popularity, a common hand motion was born with the hand motion including both of the users hands going in a up and down motion. The hand motion became a famous icon in the social media space with the motion being quickly joined with 6-7 as famous creators and basketball players, even players of outside sports such as football, soccer, and hockey joining in the trend. But what does it mean? The common answer to that is the motion means so-so or “mid” which means somethings average, mediocre or overall unimpressive.
With this new meme taking over the media and social space, many people such as teachers and parents have taken the initiative to learn the joke or even just straight ban it. However despite this the internet sensation has been spread so much you could probably find or hear it 6-7 times a day.
